My experience with Raguel

Working with Raguel has been an interesting one. Every time I’ve wanted to call in Raguel “something” gets in the way… it’s rained, when I’ve wanted to go on a light walk or I’ve been interrupted.

The interesting part of this is.. despite the distractions, or whatever life throws at me, I’ve always managed to maintain a distinct level of calmness. It’s like a warm hug from a friend when Raguel is around. Raguel is there before you need them.

I’m used to working with tight deadlines, having a background in media, television and publishing but most recently, I was on a tight deadline working down to the wire with a website launch before a content freeze took place. The content was delivered last minute, and I worked through, meeting the deadline with two minutes to spare, without any stress or meltdowns. I was “cool as a cucumber” and I felt like that too. Interestingly, I had called in Raguel that morning to spend the day with me.

Afterwards, It was like we just got to hang out… it really was like having a friend around. And who better to spend time with, than an archangel known as “friend of God”.

Stories and symbolism

Raguel’s oldest story is in the Book of Enoch, an ancient text that isn’t in most Bibles but is still treasured by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Raguel is named there as one of the holy angels who watch, with the job of keeping order among the lights of heaven. I love that. Even the stars have someone making sure they’re where they need to be.

Raguel also guides Enoch on his journey through the heavens. When Enoch sees a restless fire racing to the west, chasing the lights of the sky, it’s Raguel who explains what he’s looking at. That’s how Raguel feels to me: a patient guide who helps you make sense of something too big to take in on your own.

Raguel’s name is usually translated as “friend of God”, and some read it as “shepherd of God”. Both fit with what I’ve felt. A good friend tells you the truth kindly, and a shepherd brings everyone back together. That’s why I call on Raguel when something feels unfair, or when people I care about have drifted apart.

In 745, a church council in Rome condemned a preacher named Aldebert, whose prayers called on Raguel and other angels not named in the Bible. Since then, the Catholic Church has officially named only three archangels: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Raguel never left, though. Plenty of us still call on them, and today they’re known as the angel of harmony and justice.

Simple practices
